President of Baseball Operations
Sam Byrns
-
Sam brings a wealth of experience in pitching, performance training, and athlete development, combining his playing career with a strong coaching background. He holds a Master of Business Administration from St. John’s University, where he also served as the baseball team’s strength and conditioning coach. As a pitcher at Le Moyne College, Sam played a high-leverage back end bullpen role, logging over 100 innings pitched while earning his bachelor’s degree.

Currently, he is the Director of Athlete Success at Velo University, a performance advisor for the baseball programs at St. John’s University and Fordham University, and the pitching coach at his alma mater, Fox Lane High School. His expertise in player development, strength training, and high-performance coaching allows him to guide athletes toward their full potential on and off the field.

Senior Director of Player Development
Jake McGrath

One of the all-time great hitters in Fox Lane High School history, Coach McGrath posted a career batting average over .420. He began his collegiate career at Quinnipiac University before transferring to Manhattanville, where he finished with a .299 career batting average.

After graduation, Jake transitioned into coaching, starting at White Plains High School before returning to Fox Lane in 2019, where he has been instrumental in player development. His deep knowledge of hitting and game strategy makes him a valuable asset to the program.

Founder & Chief Advisor
Matt Hillis
A highly accomplished baseball coach with over 30 years of experience, Coach Hillis has made a significant impact at every level of the sport. Serving as the hitting coach at Columbia University from 1989-1991, he then went on to become the head varsity coach at Woodlands High School from 1992-1998, where he earned 2x League Coach of the Year honors.
From 1998-2001, he was an assistant coach at Army, before taking on the head baseball coach role at Fox Lane High School in 2002, where he has remained to this day. With 400+ career wins, his leadership has led to 2 Section Championships, a 2003 & 2025 NYS Regional Championship, and a spot in the NYS Final Four as well as the NYS State Championship
A 17-time League Champion and a 4-time Section 1 Coach of the Year, Coach Hillis has shaped the careers of 188 college baseball players, including four MLB draftees, notably Henry Davis, who was selected 1st overall in the 2021 MLB Draft. With a remarkable .684 winning percentage since 2002, he was inducted into the Fox Lane High School Hall of Fame in 2023.

Joseph Lombardo

Joseph Lombardo has been coaching baseball since 1997 and has worked at every level, from T-Ball to 14U travel teams. In addition to his extensive coaching experience, he has been a Board Director for the Bedford Hills-Katonah Little League since 2015 and has served on the board of the Northern Westchester Thunder travel program.

A dedicated contributor to the baseball community, Joseph often volunteers as a Little League umpire and helps prepare fields for game days—a commitment he has upheld since his teenage years.

Panos Sinis

Panos is a current member of the Fox Lane varsity coaching staff and former player of SUNY Cortland & SUNY Purchase where he played both catcher and outfield. A fierce competitor with a passion for winning, he brings his energy and dedication to the athletes.

A 2022 graduate of Fox Lane High School, Panos now serves as a strength coach at VeloU, where he applies his knowledge and experience to help young athletes develop and progress in their careers.

Bob Byrns
Bob is a seasoned coach with years of experience across various levels of competition. His dedication and passion for coaching have made a lasting impact on athletes. Whether it's youth leagues or high school teams, Bob brings invaluable insights and strategies to help his players excel. His commitment to fostering talent and teamwork sets him apart as a truly exceptional coach.

Danny Spolansky

Danny was a four-year varsity starter and two-time team captain at Fox Lane High School, known for his leadership and commitment to excellence. Danny was a key member of the 2025 State Finalist team where he was all section and a player of the year candidate. He is currently pursuing a degree in Media with a concentration in Sports Media at Indiana University.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Danny serves as an EBUA umpire and is passionate about mentoring young athletes, helping them develop both their skills and their competitive mindset.

As of 2026 Danny also serves as an assistant varsity coach for Bloomington High School South in Bloomington Indiana.

John Czernyk

John brings a deep understanding of infield play, swing mechanics, and baseball IQ to the coaching staff. A three-year varsity starter at shortstop, he earned All-Section honors during his high school career. John was also a key member of the 2025 State Finalist team.

John is currently playing collegiate baseball at Stevens Institute of Technology, John’s technical expertise and passion for player development make him an invaluable resource for athletes looking to refine their skills.

JJ Lombardo

JJ Lombardo is a bright, young coach with a deep understanding of game management and strategy. A key pitching instructor for Red Foxes, he has a strong track record in player development.

As a pitcher at Fox Lane High School, JJ posted a sub-3.00 ERA demonstrating his command and effectiveness on the mound. JJ is also a part of the 2025 State Finalist team at Fox Lane. His analytical approach and ability to connect with athletes make him a rising leader in the program.

Micheal Byrns
Michael is a dedicated advocate for youth athletes, particularly in the game of baseball. Passionate about helping players stay healthy and develop their skills, he draws from his own experience as a standout college pitcher. A four-year player at SUNY Fredonia, Michael earned a reputation for his dominance on the mound, striking out over a batter per inning and consistently limiting opponents to a batting average below .250. His commitment to fostering growth in the game and promoting player well-being makes him a valuable mentor to aspiring athletes.

Tyler Renz

Tyler Renz holds the all-time records for ERA, wins, and strikeouts at Fox Lane High School. His talent and dominance on the mound earned him a selection in the MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers straight out of high school.
